Born in London. Live and work in New York.
Londoner Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands from The Clash to Boy George as well as 3 Police album covers.
Moving to New York in 1982, she was drawn to the underground Hip Hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt’n’Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, Big Daddy Kane are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American Culture and History and the Museum of the City of New York.
Janette has published four books: ‘Rap, Portraits & Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers’, ‘Made In The UK The Music of Attitude 1977-1983’, ‘The Breaks, Stylin’ and Profilin’ 1982-1990′ and ‘El Hoyo Maravilla’.
Her photographs have most recently been exhibited at: The Museum of the City Of New York, The Photographer’s Gallery London, HVW8 LA, Le Salon Paris, Morrison Hotel Gallery NYC, Tower Records Tokyo, Blender Gallery Sydney.
Janette lives and works in New York City. She is the New York editor for the British style magazine ‘Jocks&Nerds’.

Proche du mouvement Punk Rock, Janette Beckman, a débuté sa carrière à Londres photographiant les groupes The Clash, Boy George et réalisant trois pochettes pour The Police.
En 1982 elle s’installe à New York et se rapproche de l’underground hip hop. Au bon endroit au bon moment, elle immortalise Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt’n’Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, Big Daddy Kane et bien d’autres qui font désormais partie de la collection permanente du nouveau Smithsonian National Museum of African American Culture and History et du Musée de la ville de New York.
